I was attracted to the practice of law because I like to help people, especially folks that aren’t getting a ‘fair shake,’ so to speak. Over the years since I first started to practice, I have mostly specialized in Social Security Disability law and Consumer Bankruptcy Law - both areas where I could help the underdog beat the ‘system.’ I feel that I tend to identify with the downtrodden ‘little guy’ much more easily than the big system. Having been unable to work myself in the distant past for a brief period during my recovery from an extended illness, I feel that I can personally relate to how many of our clients feel when they are unable to pay their bills or even care for their own homes due to no fault of their own. In addition, I have witnessed the financial and emotional toll that impairments such as cancer have taken upon members of my own family. I became my mother’s personal ‘advocate’ and ‘home health aide’ at a young age when I tried to help her deal with the insurance companies and the health system as she dealt with the effects of terminal cancer. I don’t really think that I have ever stopped being that sort of advocate. I still get a good feeling every time I am able to help one of my client’s get the benefits that they and their family deserve from the system that is supposed to be there for them in their time of financial need.
Despite being born with a bilateral hearing impairment, I have been able to succeed both academically and in the legal profession, probably because I have to listen more closely than most. I think that this has served my clients and me well when it comes to my advocacy in Social Security Disability cases. I have always enjoyed research and I tend to be very detail oriented. I often find medical records and people’s stories to be fascinating. My goal is to have my cases as well developed as possible prior to the hearing in order that my client’s will win the benefits that they deserve as soon as possible. After practicing Social Security Disability Law for almost ten years, I still find it and my clients to be fascinating. I guess that means that I am in the right field.
In particular, I always try to look out for my clients as I would want my lawyer to look out for me if I were in their shoes.
